I know everyone hates to start thinking about the cooler weather approaching, but it’s coming.
There is a misconception out there that I would like to clear up. And that is the thinking that your pet needs long hair to keep them warm in the winter.
Now I do believe that some hair can keep them warmer. But you want to keep up with your regular grooming in the winter so they aren’t left dirty and matted for months. This can be very uncomfortable and it is very hard on them to have to be shaved down.
Remember they live in the house with us and we keep our homes warm enough for them. It is much more humane to keep their coat at a manageable length than to let it get out of control.
Now, if you have a Nordic Breed your grooming needs will be different. Now is the time of year to have them professionally groomed. They need a clean mat free coat to keep them healthy in the winter. You need to get the entire dead coat out so that it doesn’t get bunchy and then matted. If they are an outside dog this is extremely important to keep them free of fleas and other parasites.
