Let’s talk about grooming during the winter months.  All of the years I’ve been grooming I repeatedly
hear the same thing over and over.  “I can’t bathe my dog in winter.” Or “Leave him or her a
little longer or they will get cold.”  So people put off grooming or they let their furry friend get Very Furry. This can create some problems in the spring.  Your pet could end up with mats from having a longer coat or neglected coat.

If your pet lives in the house they shouldn’t get to cold.  Our pets who normally get their hair cut may find
it a little chilly when they go out to do their business.  But, I find with the cooler temperatures they get their business done faster so I don’t have to stay out in the cold so long.  But, if you prefer a longer coat in the winter just remember a couple things to keep them mat free and healthy.

If you normally have them professionally groomed every 6 weeks you may have to have it done in 4 or 5
weeks. Before the longer hair gets matted.  Bring them to the Groomer at 2 or 3 week intervals for a bath and brush out to help eliminate matting.  Ask your Groomer to show you how to properly brush out the long coat so you can work on it at home.

It is extremely important for our outdoor friends to have a healthy coat.  The Nordic breeds are designed
to handle the cooler temperatures.  But if the coat is matted or extremely dirty your pet will not be
comfortable.

A matted coat on any dog is not healthy or comfortable. Mats can restrict movement if they are located
in the armpits and groin.  Mats are a great habitat for fleas and other parasites.  Your pets’ coat cannot
dry well naturally when they get wet from snow or dew.  And an unhealthy coat can lead to all kinds of skin problem.

So call your best four-legged friend over, run your fingers through their coat, and make sure they are
ready for winter. (I am)
