Our main concern at Poochies & mutts is the physical and emotional well being of your pet.  Let’s talk about their physical well being. Specifically our shot requirements. The reason for the vaccinations is to keep all of our guests healthy. The requirements are the same for all of our services boarding, day care, and grooming.  We require that your pet be vaccinated or Rabies, Distemper and Bordetella. While the shots for Rabies and Distemper are commonly given, Bordetella is not. The Bordetella Vaccination is given to prevent an upper respiratory infection similar to the human “Whooping Cough”. It is commonly called “Kennel Cough”. It is an airborne infection and is spread when dogs come into contact with other dogs. There are many places this may occur: kennels, dog parks grooming salon, training classes, etc. It is very important that you understand that the vaccination if it is given intranasal, has a three-day incubation period and starts losing effectiveness after eight months. If it is an injection, the incubation period varies from seven days to three weeks. There are several strains of the infection and the Bordetella Vaccination only helps to prevent one of the strains. By boarding, day care and or grooming your pet you are exposing them to this infection.  So what can you do?  Talk to your Veterinarian. He or She can tell you what you need to know to keep your pet healthy. Ask if they recommend a booster after 6 – 7 – 8 months.  Ask your groomer if they require this vaccination for all their clients. If they don’t you may be putting your pet at greater risk.  Preventative medicine is always better than waiting for the problem to occur.  Stay Happy & live like a dog!! Amy
